Yesterday I asked for shavige bath (a mixture of vermicelli, vegetables and spices), but Manju told us that’s only available in the morning. We’re going to have to do a brunch to complete our research. Sara asked for a rava dosa and he told us it’s only available in the evening. Apparently a dinner trip is also in the offing.
Since we couldn’t get what we intended, we asked Manju to suggest a dish for us. His eyes lit up and he said, “Open dosa masala!” And so that’s what we got.
Open dosa masala
First off, it’s well worth noting that “open dosa masala” does not appear on the menu. Sri Durga has a secret menu! Open dosa masala is a crispy dosa dusted liberally (REALLY liberally) with delicious dry spices, and finished with a big dollop of potato/veggie mix. I can’t even begin to tell you how delicious the dry spices are. They coat your fingers like Cheetos dust and heat your tongue and tummy. Spectacular.
Manju came by a couple of times to ask us what we thought and was delighted with how enthusiastic we were about this dish. We asked him what his very favorite dish is, and he grinned and said, “Open dosa masala!”
Served with coconut chutney and tomato sambar. Four spice-dusted thumbs up.
Ambience
The ambience at Sri Durga is homey and super casual. Through the side window, you see a little alleyway and other buildings on the street. More about the windows and the endlessly inventive entrepreneurial Indian spirit in the next post.
